You might be surprised, Ken.
A well-known Spaniard near Barcelona used to hang out around 14.210
or so. (may still be there) Rumor has it that he was delivering 20+ KW to
a big Yagi. Not to say that he could not command the frequency, but he
was only 16-18 db louder on the S-Meter than his European neighbors
running legal-limit.

14 KW on the U.S. West Coast is probably about average nowadays...
When the P5 shows up someday on 14.195, Gov. Gray ("Gray-Out") Davis
might have to quickly contract for more juice. After three days operation
or so, a very skilled DX operator will be able to get a QSO with legal-limit
power because of the split operation; unlike the old AM days when the
"California Kilowatts" took up the entire window!

IMO, big power is run by wealthy DX'ers who need to get the "new one" in
the log in less than an hour so they can get to the work place and earn their
six-figure salary. Another example is the very old-timer who is afraid he might
croak and not be at the top of the DXCC Honor Roll at the time.

DX'ers are a weird bunch...you work all your adult life to build and maintain
a formidable station, fill several shoe boxes with QSL cards and put awards
on the wall. Then you die; some local buys your station for $500, your XYL
throws the cards and awards in the dumpster, and your accomplishments
are removed from all publications.

Since we are all destined to become a ground radial for a 6 meter vertical
sooner or later, I say enjoy the hobby! Life is too short for screaming at
the P5 for a week.
