According to info I received from W8JI, N1JV, N2JV and W0ID two years ago when I
asked the same question,

8877s manufactured between late 1985 and 1989 are suspect. 

There was a design change in August 86 which seemed to be the start of the
problem, but Tom had problems in 85.
