Good thinking.
You have re-discovered what Bill Orr did with a 6 m amp back in the 80s.  He 
used flat teflon on each end of the coil and fixed capacitors.  With a brass 
threaded rod down the center, he could compress the coil or allow it to 
expand, thus varying the inductance.
It's shown in the old W6SAI handbooks.
