In case anyone wants to transfer the heater/filament voltage adjustment
discussion into practice, I have some variable transformers that may be
of use:

Powerstat --
   Type 10 120V 1.25 A variable transformer, used, no knob or dial -- $15
   Type 10B 120V 1.75 A variable transformer, used, with dial, no knob --
$20

   These are both 3" diameter by about 2-1/2" deep not including the 1/4"
diameter shaft.
