These devices always seem to have a reputation for bad behaviour. Has it
ever been established whether the tubes themselves are flaky or is it just
that they've habitually been used with inadequate power supplies? ISTR from
my time in the BBC that autopsied samples often displayed severe cathode
damage, with oxide material seemingly having been stripped off, but maybe
that was something to do with inadequately designed PSUs.
