    I must admit I've not been following the Bird thread closely as it
wanders...
but, for those who are interested, there is an excellent explanation of
the coupling mechanism complete with drawings & formulas in:  "Single
Sideband Systems and Circuits" by Sabin & Schoenike, 1987 (ISBN
07-054407-7) pp. 425-27.
