The self  inductance of a straight wire can be found at

However, how do you measure it without or use it with out making a loop?
Unless you are using it as an antenna or part of a transmission line.

Once you have closed a loop you have something much different.

For example the old TV turret tuners had coils that were trimmed by
a machine pushing in on one side of the coil thus distorting it. This 
stretched the wire
in each turn a bit but it also reduced the area inside the coil. The 
inductance
was reduced.
