Another method for lightning protection, is to erect a lightning conductor
(either a pole or spanned wire earth to protect larger area's) , and make
sure your installation falls bellow a 45 Degree shadow from the tip to the
ground.
In South Africa in certain areas lightning is a big problem to us, and much
time is spent on preventative measures. Even thatch roof houses require
lightning conductors, to shield/shadow them for insurance purposes etc.

One of our installations, an emergency services centre, makes use of an
extensive underground earth mat, as well as a large lightning conductor
pole. They regularly take strikes, with no interruption to operation of
various sensitive communications equipment. Same principle, the pole shadows
the installation.
