In some boutique ultra high stage gain audio amplifiers 
made for guitar players, dc is pretty much a requirement.  
Else the circuit would just plain not work.  I have built polarity 
reversal circuits for friends.

Debates and discussions on guitar audio amplifier 
news groups bring up interesting personal choices.

Over voltage filaments and heaters along with dc operation 
are reported to slightly reduce the expected 10,000 hour 
(claimed by one tube dealer in the group).  These "hot 
running" amplifiers are judged on their actual output 
"tone."   Many professional players are willing to change 
their tubes once every year or two for that extra _____.

DC filament / heater operation has a hard core group 
of people who swear by it.
