Actually, you naysayers are jumping on the guy pretty hard without doing a 
little homework first. Those great radio minds of the 40's had some very 
clever ideas for unusual winding geometries that reduced inductance 
considerably, particularly for use in precision resistors and attenuators. 

If you are really interested, take a look in the first Chapter of Terman's 
'Radio Engineering'.
