I've been replacing them with Super Ultra High Brightness LEDs...

I put a nice RED one into my TS-440 for the front display...
great for night work, but not so good for reading the S meter...
will replace with a white one soon... Bright as all get out, btw...

I've used the Amber ones for meters and dials... nice...

Look ma! No burn outs!
