[Amps] Why hasn't solid state replaced tubes?

Maritime specifications required -31dB rel PEP or -25dB rel tone at the
full output. A number of commercial HF rigs in the 100 watt class that I
was involved with were rated at -28dB rel PEP: they weren't, in general,
used with amplifiers, though.

One interesting point is that  bi polar transistor amplifiers tend to have
worse high order IM products: although they are some way down, they still
can cause a problem because they extend a long way out. MOSFETs are
reputedly better.

I'm still a tube guy  at heart - that comes of working in the semiconductor
industry for the last 24 years!
