Hi Gene, 
-
In a common form, a zero crossing switch is often 
similar to a solid state relay for a specific type 
of AC operation. 
-
The relay is designed to change (switch)  when 
the AC supply voltage is at or near the zero 
portion of the sine wave.   ie zero crossing.
-
There are a number of variants on the size, 
application and spec, but they tend to function 
along a similar thought.
