In the case of my gassy 3-500Z, I'm not sure the noise came from the
tube itself, although the tube was clearly at fault.  Perhaps it was
the power transformer going "ouch".  :-) 

Whatever it was scared the h*** out of me.  I don't like loud noises
from my equipment, other than a stereo of course.
