  My neighbors have a BMW X-5 (she) and a 740 (he) and both vehicles  
have 14v electrical systems.  However, the xenon-arc headlamps 
seemingly operate from a DC switcher supply.

  As I recall, both vehicles have a 125A, 14v alternator.
