So true, Bill.
A step-start device is not just to keep the transformer from going
"thunk" when powered up.
It also protects the diodes and any other current sensitive components
in the circuit. Observing the H.V. meter upon power-up will tell us
when the correct delay has been applied for any given set of P.S.
components.
