[Amps] Plate choke resistance

Hello,
I noticed that most plate chokes are wound with very thin gauge wire and 
varying diameter. I assume that would make it quite resistive/lossy. Some 
are split and mounted at right angles. Is there an advantage to using a thin 
gauge conductor other than space considerations?
