You can't always physically see corona.  It does make an  electrial noise 
however, which is how the real high voltage insulation testers  determine its 
onset by amplifying the noise. That can be quite strange sounding  too - squeals 
and so on, where you'd expect a wide band type noise or even a  'popping' type 
sound.
