Something to allow for with these - 8:1 distance to spot size. At 1' 
measuring distance, you're looking at a 1.5" dia. spot. If you're trying 
to guage a component that's smaller than this and the surroundings 
aren't the same temperature, you will get a wrong reading. That's far 
from saying it's no use.
