[Amps] Grid fuses (was: Life and gain of 3-500Z)

I think we're talking about two different problems here:

1. Excessive grid current, without internal arcing.
2. Internal arcing.

A fuse, resistor or solid state protective circuit is not 
going to be
much good against #2, but should help #1, I would think. Am 
I wrong?>>

 The threshold between normal operation and damage is as 
little as 1:2 or 1:3 in many cases.

A fuse won't reliably last if rated too low and it isn't 
fast enough or reliable enough if rated higher.
A resistor would be laughable if it weren't such a very 
damaging suggestion.
