If you have a spare set of contacts, consider using them to open across a series resistor. This works best on DC, where you can have a nice big capacitor charged up to cause closure of the relay, and then have a series resistor that is switched in once the relay has closed, and the current requirement has dropped.. This may not be practical in this case, but could be worth considering.
