I know this was said in jest, but don't be tempted to use ethanol. It 
attacks many of the softer plastics, as does methanol (wood alcohol).

The safest solvent - for parts and humans - is still detergent and 
water, and a close second is isopropyl alcohol. Between the two you 
should be able to clean just about anything.
