Not sure how typical this is, but many of the outlets
in my house have a 3 wire feed from ganged breakers
with one socket on each of the 120V wires and a common
neutral. The house is about 25 years old, and I
presume was wired to code :-)

I have not taken advantage of this for the ham shack
where there is a separate feed, but it let me put a
240V outlet in the kitchen so I can use a 3kW European
electric kettle to get my morning cup of tea in less
than the 20 minutes that North American kettles seem
to require.... (Even expatriate Brits cannot function
without frequent infusions of tea.)
