[Amps] Rectifier

Dear Tom,

I put in and took out Lorain FloTrols for many, many years in
telephone central offices.

Lorain was taken over by Emerson Network Power Products,
but if you contact them in North Ridgeville, OH, you might get a
manual out of 'em.

The output is adjustable between maybe 45 and 54 volt because
of the different spec'd battery strings they used these to charge.

It is a ferroresonant type with an excellent regulator circuit that's meant
to control the innards to within a few hundredths of a volt.

You might need new oil filled caps, though, because that's the main cause of
repairs to these units over the long haul.

You definitely want to clean it out well. Map everything and unplug/replug
all the connectors, maybe use a dab o' No-Ox when you seat them permanently.

Usually, these puppies were rack-mounted so they cool from the bottom. If
you plan
on using it in your shack, invest in a good fan.

These units will use a shunt-type ammeter for the DC ammeter and they are
pretty
accurate. What needs to happen is a separate line (twisted pair~20AWG) goes
right to
the load, or battery plant if you're charging batteries with it, and back to
the REF + and -
terminals so the regulator knows what the voltage is at the load because
oftentimes the voltage drop through the switch plants would impart a false
sense of security and the battery cells needed to be right on the money so
they didn't boil out.

You found yourself a piece of American technology when things were built to
keep
working after the Commies dropped the big ones, and so these are pretty
shielded
against EMP and NMP.

Subject: [Amps] Rectifier

I just came into a Flotrol Rectifier unit. I have no information, manuals or
anything on this but it is in very very good condition. It came from a radio
station and has been stored for several years, I have no idea of how many.
The old fellow who removed it said it was working just fine when it was
removed and the inside and components look...not new but certainly in
terrific condition.
I really have no need for it but any info would help about specs and the
value of such a beast. This has to weigh at least 150 lbs.
Here is the info on the front:
Flotrol
Lorain 30 ampere Rectifier
Input 115/230 volts 24/13 amps Frequency 50-60
Output 56 30
# Spec 5411-025
Lorain Products Corp
Lorain, Ohio

Any help or ideas appreciated.

Thanks, 73, Tommy WD4K
