I would tend to buy *new* silica jell not use something that has been in 
a shoe box. It might well be dry, but you don't know. Here in the UK, 
both RS and Farnell sell it quite cheaply. I bought some and as soon as 
I have removed a bag, I seal up the rest of them tightly.

I would put the kit in a plastic bag with the silica gel, then remove as 
much air (and hence moisture) from this bag as I could. Then seal the 
bag well.

Used silica gel will probably be ok, but its anyones guess and I would 
not risk it for the quite modest cost of buying the gel fresh. Make sure 
you keep the bags tightly sealed though.
