I'll start with two or three hoary chestnuts:

Life is too short for wire antennas, short towers, and QRP.

Awesome arrays and tall towers can give you front-to-back ratio, but only 
active                         devices get you forward gain.

In days of old, when hams were bold, and sideband uninvented, the word would 
pass                 by pounded brass, and all were well-contented.
