Do not use Acetone on painted surfaces, or they won't be painted any longer. 
Some say Windex is a good all around cleaner for removing grime, safe and cheap.
WD40 maybe, but will probably spark a debate.  It leaves a film, but it cleans
and lubricates both at once.
Do you have WD40 and Windex brands in the UK?
