...usually they do it for esthetic purposes. Ah HF at least, the skin effect
occurs at depths greater than the plating, so that a sizeable amount of
current still flows in the copper underneath. Not that it doesn't do
anything, but apart from keeping tarnish away, it doesn't do much, unless
it's very much thicker than you're likely to find in a commercial product.
It would be much different in a VHF amplifier.

Does anyone here have any before and after comparisons of silver
plating HF tank coils? It seems most of the commercial amateur amp
makers do it but I have never seen any specific data. All comments
