It's not so much the tubes I'm worried about as the rest of the amplifier.  About 10 years ago I bought four unopened 1961-dated Penta 4-1000As in the JAN boxes with what looks like the original paper tape.   The seller said they'd just been stored.  Most are still in the boxes unopened but the two I've used and interchanged having run up in the usual manner have been fine and give great output.

It's all the old capacitors in long-unused kit that fail in my experience, taking other components with them.  I don't know how scientific a belief this is, but old unused kit just seems to grow one dry joint after another, whereas well-used kit seems to run and run.

I've never had a problem with an 813...so far. PL-172s OTOH...
