A couple of things occur to me to explain their continuing popularity:

-- tubes are instant-on, almost immortal, and not that expensive to replace.
-- tank circuit is capable of matching fairly severe mismatches, such as an 
80-meter CW dipole up in the phone band.  My impression is that many newer 
amps won't do that.
