REPLY:

A long time ago I thought that too - that one diode would be sufficient. But
then someone posted a bizarre scenario involving a broken ground wire and some
other condition (I forget the details) where reverse current could flow during
an arc. Since then I always use two diodes. 

Cheap sleep-at-night insurance.  :-)
