Modulators are used to heat cool, damp basements.  The red glow of the plates are also used for therapy.  It is called "modulating therapy",  which is a wonderful self-therapy for introverts, and the more you talk, the brighter the glow, which is both reassuring and comforting.  

Instead of wrapping up in the warm blanket that we did as kids, the process often involves sitting in a chair, with the hand wrapped around a chrome plated pipe, with feet propped up on the desk and eyes fixed upon the wonderful red pulsing glow.  

Three hours of therapy a night is almost guaranteed to make you forget about economic stimulus, healthcare reform or greenhouse gasses.
