Don't get glass cleaner or even water NEAR the tube if you have any desire of saving the nomenclature that is printed on the envelope.  Just use a dry cloth and carefully wipe the envelope.  That works in the vast percentage of times.

Glass cleaner should clean all glass tubes. I clean silver plated copper and brass with "Tarnex" silver cleaner and I wash it off with hot water.
