Guys,

The stuff is Manganin wire and it's claim to fame is that it has nearly 
perfect zero temperature coefficient which is good for meters etc. See 
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manganin and the stuff was invented by 
Edward Weston whose name is synonymous with quality meters.
