This thread reminds me of many of the older transformers had very little insulationg from the center tap to ground.
In fact the specifications had a warning that they were onlyto be used in full wave center tap applications only.
Newer transforers, even those with a center tap, are often used in full wave or voltage doubler applications.
  But in those years when the Iron and Copper was much cheaper than the rectifiers that was not the case.
Naturally, a fullwave bridge rectifier power supply  is more efficient than a full wave center tapped power supply.
At least for HV supplies. For very low voltages it is not the case.
