Actually that particular piece of nonsense was originated by good 'ol Ben
Franklin and has been perpetuated by the Kool-Aid drinkers ever since. 

Good thing Ben was not a hydrologist or we would have rivers that flow
uphill. The individual water molecules flow downhill of course, but the
"current" would flow uphill. 

It's long past time to fix the nonsense, guys.
