I didn't think the tubes were still made.   The sockets IIRC are 
relatively easy to modify.  Course, make a mistake and you end up with a 
"pile" of parts

To me, the tubes are better, or preferable to the  8877/3CX1500.
As you say, instant on and very rugged.
