It seems to me that transient voltage suppressors

(TVS) diodes on the low voltage stuff,
and transtectors <http://www.protectiongroup.com/Transtector> on the 
power lines would be a better (but more expensive) way to go.
They can take an unlimited number of "hits".  Just my 2¢.
