[Amps] HV transformer and Variac

How do you design a transformer to "not" run backwards ?

If it's a step down design, ( utility company use )  primary current is low
and secondary current is high.

Reversed for a amp, primary current is high and secondary current is low.

It's the same ratios either way +- losses.
