Just remember that the old monitors are only as good as their last  
calibration.
And dried out capacitors will make the monitor inaccurate.

A cheap O-scope with a short lead wrapped around the coax will give  
you a good look at your signal.

Play with the audio levels until you *just* see the center of the audio
"kissing" on the zero line. then back off a touch.
