Sounds like another case of physicists creating a mathematical model
of something and gradually coming to believe the model is the reality.
The Big Bang is a perfect example. It used to be called the Big Bang
Theory and now it has morphed into simply the Big Bang, despite never
having been proven, other than by the model.
