In the days before these manufactured assemblies and dipoles were made

Or maybe they are marveling at the quality and affordability of modern
day equipment of all kinds. Let's hold a seance and find out. :-)

Bill, why is it that you always seem to push back at folks that
believe that anything that was felt or done in the past is a "bad
thing" as compared to what is done in the present which is always
a "good thing"?

The fact is that hams in the past homebrewed feedlines and
antennas usually because they could not afford to pay others
to do it for them. Yes, there were exceptions, but that was
indeed the general rule.

When you do things yourself, as varied as fixing a bicycle to building
dipoles, to making your own feedline, you learn. You do not learn
by reaching into your pocket and pulling out money to pay others
to do things for you.

What really is at play here is a simple fact. The more of yourself you
put into something, the more pleasure you will get out of it when it
succeeds.

Of course, your milage may vary, and to each his own, and I may not be
politically correct. Or... "Whatever"
