[Amps] PL172 (8295)

The chances of a PL-172, that has been unused for years, being good (no air leakage), are somewhere between extremely slim, and none!

I have a very late version Hallicrafters HT-33A (has all the circuitry of the HT-33B but not the dual meters, etc.) that has been badly "hacked" and cannot be easily, if at all, restored to original condition.  That amplifier is definitely a candidate to be modified to use a Russian GS-31b triode.  The GS-31b is the same diameter as the PL-172 and things like the blower, etc., will work without any changes.

The original PL-172 with glass seals is NOTORIOUS for air leakage and not
outgassing from the anode.....big difference.
