Try this:  There's an old trick often used for receiving tubes where
the markings have faded.  Cool the tube down and gently blow on the
tube. Your breath will condense on the lettering and make it visible. 

I've never had to do this with a transmitting tube but it works great
on small receiving tubes. Good luck.
