Except for that 3,000V power supply said rookie forgot about, that kicked
his ass across the  shack and made is wife a widow. That part always gets
left out. If said rookie isn't good enough to handle 50V he has no business
trying 3,000 because someone said it's easier.

W6PQL sells everything needed for a 1.5KW solid state amp.

That's true and there is a reason for that. Building a legal limit solid
state amp is not for beginners. A tube amp is much easier and more forgiving
of rookie mistakes. 

Not to mention he would also have to build a set of harmonic filters and get
an antenna tuner, neither of which is needed with a tube amp.
