Hi Kevin,
   I've been (slowly) tinkering together a 3KW switcher.  

   Parts are available that would easily scale the design up to 8KW.  

   The bigger the supply, the more a switcher becomes desireable size & weightwise (The transformer would weigh around 4 lbs. at this level), not sure about cost.  :-)
