Hi Chris,
AO becomes highly inaccurate below 1/4 wave or so. The more recent AO/YO
packages included NEC-Wires/NEC-Yagis  which is NEC-2 based and
reasonably accurate down to about .1 wave. You can do the dimensional
work in AO/YO and then run that file in NW/NY to look at real ground
performance.
If you want to get real close to the ground then EZNEC 2.0 is the choice.
