Sitten huonot uutiset:
CeBIT alkoi tänään ja Ascom esittelee siellä oman ratkaisunsa PLC:hen. Menen
ensi viikolla paikalle ja pitää kyllä käydä katsomassa.

Siemens said it had decided to pull the plug on so-called powerline
communications, which allow data transmission and Internet access via mains
electricity rather than telephone networks, but will continue to observe
developments in the field closely and may resume the projects at some point
in future.

As well as connecting users to the Internet and phone services, proponents
of powerline communications hope the technology will revolutionise the home,
by networking all domestic electrical appliances.

But as well as regulatory problems, there have also been technical problems,
such as noise on the line as electrical appliances are turned on and off.
That can make a data connections fail or interfere with the datastream.

Furthermore, different technological standards in different countries are
also proving a headache.

Ascom plans to unveil powerline communications products at CeBIT, and RWE
has said that it hopes to launch a service this year and other smaller
regional utilities have also been working on their own projects.
