Comments:
Well, what can I say. It's like I said to a couple of coworkers today that
contesting allows a person to experience an enormous range of feelings by
just sitting down for a weekend :) Exhilaration and euphoria through long
pileups and strategic successes, desperation and "what's the point"
disbelief through fatigue and aurora-destroyed bands.
The high bands produced some very nice rates (mostly on Saturday), with 8
hours of >100Q and 12 in total of >90Q, and the best clock hour being 166Q.
Ten meters was a disappointment during the daytime opening both days, but I
kept watch later in the evening and was happy to see a very nice opening for
a few hours around local midnight on Saturday. Signals were quite strong and
much higher rates could have been had there and on 15m, which I was running
on simultaneously, but there didn't seem to be enough people around beaming
over the pole at that hour. The 10m opening reoccurred on Sunday evening,
but was considerably weaker then. NQ4I was one of the band openers on both
days.
On the flip-side, 160m and 80m were a catastrophy. The OH-W/VE path runs
near/through the polar region, and although armed with the trademark lowband
yagis of OH8X, I was not able to get anything going. In fact I didn't hear a
single W/VE on 160m the entire weekend, although for example TI5W further
down south came in fine and JAs could be heard in the afternoon. 80m was
also noisy and tough, with no QSOs there after the first morning (and hardly
any W/VE heard after that). Mother Nature apparently demanded some respect
from us arctic people for the solar wind stream that arrived Saturday night.
KM1W and others had been a solid 599+ for a while on 40m that night as I
kept monitoring the band for a possible move, but I decided to stay on the
high bands since they were producing nice rates. Then the flutter began on
10m&15m, and when I checked 40m, the East Coast powerhouses had been reduced
to weak signals with echos. So there went that band too... :) Coupled with
no 80/160, I simply had to kiss goodbye to the targeted 3000Q/300mult
record.
Anyway, it was great fun once again. Especially the high-band runs were
invigorating. It was downright exciting to watch for and listen to those
tricky 10m openings and to add one multiplier after another there from the
seemingly noiseless band. A "kid in the candy store" feeling. Like others I
also noticed the increased occurrence of zero-beating in my pileups,
resulting from callers clicking Skimmer/cluster spots and arriving on the
exact same frequency. That made things a bit more challenging, but
fortunately some ops were strategic enough to move a little to the side when
calling. I also worked further on SO2R intra-QSO interleaving which can
bring the rate up nicely, although it is quite taxing on the brain.
