Paljon kiitoksia OH-kusoista! Kelit oli upeat, niin bandilla kuin ulkonakin.

Comments:
After a successful CQWW CW effort last November, the opportunity to return to CR2X this October for my first SSB contest from a DX location was a real pleasure. Toni OH2UA had made a trip to the station earlier in the autumn for maintenance work, and things were mostly in place for the SSB leg.
Some more remained to be done before the contest, however, and thus I departed Helsinki for São Miguel and Ribeira Grande on the Saturday before the contest. Knowing that my good friend Ilkka OH1WZ had the possibility to come on such a trip too, I invited him along. I am an electrical engineer, but my expertise lies in the innards of tiny integrated RF circuits; my practical experience with macro-level station building has been limited to helping around with various projects and stations. Having the more experienced Ilkka around was thus a good confidence boost. He humorously insisted on being called my "servant" in various social situations, but during those early maintenance days the roles were certainly reversed :)
Propagation during the contest was great, with 160m taking a bit of a hit through lower activity levels. My multiplier total is about 50 lower than targeted, but that is more than made up for by the comparatively high DX percentage (~ 70%). Indeed, at some point on Sunday the strategy changed to
mostly forgetting about multipliers and just running NA stations to the end, going down from 10m one band at a time. Fortunately I had regained most of my cognitive abilities at that point thanks to a post-sunrise 30-minute break, and was able to make QSOs with decent rates again. Still, I had some difficulties pronouncing my callsign at times, and had to reassure myself by looking at the big printed callsign on the computer... I went to bed about 7 hours before the contest started but was able to sleep for only perhaps one hour. Maybe I will have to start experimenting with some chemical aids to improve the situation.
The Arcala stations OH8X and CR2X both had the now-customary audio/video streams active throughout the contest, augmented by live score reporting at http://www.cqcontest.net. As so many have excitedly commented, these technical developments are fun and take the social aspects of radio contesting to a new level. Best of all, they allow new hams and the home crews of the operators to listen in and to enjoy the ups and downs of a serious effort, ranging from the exhilaration of 300+ rates to the tired drudgery of slow low-band hours.
Thanks to the entire Radio Arcala team for another opportunity to be on the air from the Azorean superstation and to claim the European SOAB HP record. In particular, thanks to Martti OH2BH for general help and many hours of preparation related to the pre-contest station maintenance work, and to Toni OH2UA for sharing his expertise related to station engineering and CQWW propagation and strategy from CR2X. Congratulations to him also for smashing the Finnish SOAB HP record from the Arcala mother station OH8X, at 65N latitude close to the Arctic Circle. These kinds of conditions are rarely seen in the aurora zone, and he was able to use the given opportunity to the max. I would also like to express my sincere gratitude to Ilkka OH1WZ for all his help and for keeping the fighting spirit alive. Likewise, my appreciation goes to the local hams José CU2CE, Francisco CU2DX, and Bruno CS8ABG for their help before and during our stay on São Miguel. And, of course, thanks to all who were on the air in the CQWW SSB. The worldwide ham spirit is a heart-warming thing to observe.
